An intriguing historical fantasy set in Qing China that covers all the bases of a traditional young adult fantasy and runs with them. Impossible events, mythical creatures, tight family bonds, and treachery walk hand-in-hand in a sweet narrative with a headstrong girl at its helm.
A wonderful story of found families, filial loyalty, and young girls finding their voices, and fighting for what they love. Toss in all the talk of delicious food and you might just end up hungry for more!
The little details make a character whose life is very different from my own relatable and bought back memories of my own childhood. And it's a good story. When the kids get older I am reading this story to them.
A secretive dragon, an abandoned baby, the impetuous daughter of an Emperor, and a (surprising) smattering of Chinese recipes. Joyce Chng has a vivid descriptive style, and Xiao Xiao is a winning protagonist. I received this as a gift when I was sick, and it was a light and easy read, the perfect thing to enjoy while convalescing.
Ohhh I love this book! It's so good, and the characters are delightful. Joyce's writing is really special! It's a very sweet story, too, very fairy-tale, which is right up my alley. Overall a very relaxing read, and while I haven't tried the recipes yet, they sound AMAZING and I will do so at some point soon.
This book was like a breath of fresh air... I must say how good the characterisation is. The heroine is so well written that I feel as if I've known her for years, and liked her the whole time. ...The author paints a vivid portrait of the Welsh setting as well, I could see everything clearly from the first, All in all, an exceptional book, not at all what I expected, and far better than most. I would recommend this to anyone, even if they never need to kill a werewolf.
Chng's calm, unpretentious prose leaves the reader free to follow the sentences without having to work out the meaning. The eye just slides down the page without a hitch, the words fuelling the imagination without slowing things down with unnecessary over-description. Her characters are matter-of-fact and impulsive and despite being young, are not foolish, and she doesn't patronise the reader.
