The sequel to Empire’s daughter is as good as or better than the first. Richly textured, thoroughly researched, and nuanced story wrapped in perfect prose. The book, like the first, is quietly queer, showing a world that is not heteronormative without making a big deal of it. The pacing is excellent, and the writing makes you by turns want to race through and slow down to savor each page. Looking forward to Empire’s Exile, and I already have some ideas about what will happen next but Thorpe does love to surprise us!
This is probably one of the best sequels I have read. The entire story shows a different side to the cultures of this world.
I enjoyed seeing Lena in a different light as the growth shows so much that you never know what to expect.
Involving, evocative, intelligent—an outstanding historical fantasy.
There is something so special about Lena's story. It's one that you can just simply get lost in. The pace isn't slow but it isn't heart racing either. It is a beautiful combination of calm and excitement that just keeps your attention until the story is done. If there is one thing Thorpe is able is do, it's grab you from chapter one and hold on tightly until she has finished telling the story. Marian Thorpe is one of my new favorite authors and I am beyond excited to get back to Lena's story in Empire's Exile.
Here is an opportunity for the reader to learn more about the exquisite world Thorpe has created Among new friends, Lena discovers the world is far larger than she knew. Maps show cities and lands she had never heard of, except perhaps in legend...
The rich worldbuilding and history beautifully drips onto each page, helping make colourful characters come even more alive. Especially Lena, who gripped me from the first page to the last.
