Explore The Terrace with our new Cumbrian author

A wonderful detective story set in beautiful Norfolk with a feast of quirky characters to charm and beguile you.

We received a fantastic response to our call for independent Cumbrian authors and publishers to stock their books with us. One of them was Caroline Gilfillan’s cozy murder mystery, The Terrace. After reading it, we just had to stock it.

We sell our Special Edition ebooks internationally, but we're based in West Cumbria. As a family, we shop locally and do our best to ensure our money stays in the area. Local physical bookshops are much more obviously present in their communities. But the many hundreds of online bookshops all over the UK demonstrate their presence in their local cities, towns and villages in different ways. The approach we took was to stock more ebooks from our fantastic local authors and small publishers.

Disclosure: I’m drinking a bottle of Black Sheep Ale, brewed in North Yorkshire, while I write this. Sorry...

Caroline Gilfillan lives in Ulverston (birthplace of Stan Laurel and once home to science fiction author Bob Shaw). As well as fiction, she has published four poetry collections. Her poems have appeared in various anthologies, including This Place I Know: A New Anthology of Cumbrian Poetry. Her short plays have appeared as part of Kendal Yarns and Ulverston Outsiders pub scripts project.

While hailing from Suffolk and Norfolk, with a stint in Paris (oooh!), Caroline has worked to become part of the Cumbrian community.

Caroline’s book, The Terrace, is a riot!

A cozy crime mystery with additional cheese and wine…

Rags Whistledown lands on her dad’s doorstep with just her suitcase, guitar and debts for company. But a chance encounter draws her into a murder mystery she must solve.

A killer has struck in sleepy North Norfolk. Can Rags Whistledown stop them?

Set in beautiful North Norfolk, this novel peeps through the curtains of those living in an everyday terrace to uncover love, lust, and a clever, clever killer.

A brilliant review of the The Terrace describes our 40-something protagonist as:

"...a self-obsessed, vino-loving, guitar-playing, randy woman. She is an accidental detective. She's not a professional - she's a jobbing freelance journalist who has a niche market in columns about sex toys and orgasms. Broke, in debt, homeless, she pitches up at her estranged father's house in Norfolk and takes it upon herself to investigate a death which the local police have written-off as an accident."

You can see how this is going to go, can’t you?

Another reviewer recognises the hand of a poet in the prose:

"Scatty but interesting... The descriptions of the North Norfolk landscape are beautifully written and evocative. Ms Gilfillan is an accomplished poet, and this shows in the lightly-handled lyricism."

Running away from debt, Rags stays with her father in his house on the eponymous terrace. She finds herself tangled up in the goings on of the street, or rather inserts herself into them. Rags is a skilled investigative journalist though, even if she did mess that particular career up.

The ensemble cast and varied points-of-view build an exciting and fast-paced story.

Reviewers agree that The Terrace is:

"A wonderful detective story set in beautiful Norfolk with a feast of quirky characters to charm and beguile you through the twists and turns of this well-written novel."
